Berlin – the place to be. That’s what all
the young Punkrockers, burdened with the fate of growing up in the German
countryside, thought for decades and are still thinking. Its places and live
houses are legendary, like the Cotti (Metro station Cottbusser Tor), the
Punkhouse or the the SO 36.
Berlin in the 80ies was the image of David Bowie singing
“Heroes” in front of the wall, Iggy Pop and Nick Cave doing drugs in
nightclubs and thousands of good-for-nothings and outsiders escaping military
service*.
As a German I may be partisan but not only
in my opinion is Berlin by far the coolest of the European metropolises. Sure, it’s
pretty ugly compared to cities like Rome or Madrid, it may not be cutting edge
when it comes to musical trends, except maybe for Electronica or Techno. But
that was never what Berlin was about. Berlin was always a getaway, an island of
decadence in the middle of a hostile surrounding (the socialist East in the 80ies,
the rural Brandenburg nowadays). It’s a great place to live if you don’t have a
fortune to spend on rent alone and still want to enjoy the nightlife of a major
city. While London, Paris and even places that used to be rather affordable
like Madrid are way too expensive, Berlin still offers lots of possibilities of
reasonable priced housing. That’s why it was always a magnet for anyone with a
small or literally no income but a “lust for life”. No wonder that Iggy wrote
that same song in Berlin.
Therefore Berlin has always had a vibrant
Music scene and its bands were naturally influenced by city life. Berlin
Punkrock and Hardcore was mostly tougher than in the rest of Germany, simply
owed to the fact that Berlin can be a tough place. While Punkbands in the South
rebelled against the conservative boredom around them, Berlin Punks had to face
the harsh reality of life on the streets with all its downsides like drugs, gangs, violence and
nowadays stupid Nazi fucks.
However, for this column I picked four bands
that play more classic and melodic 77 style Punkrock and are still around.
I’ll start with “Zack Zack”, the band that rose from the ashes of “The Shocks”,
which some people in Japan also might know especially due to their
collaboration with “The Briefs”. Zack Zack however are more Power Pop
influenced than the Shocks were and therefore a little slower and a little more
melodic. Their style is typically German though and sounds a lot like early Neue
Deutsche Welle (German New Wave) much owed to the German lyrics. Bands like Der KFC come to mind...
Next up are “The Not-Amused”, who describe
their sound as “finest Power Pop” and that’s exactly what it is. More Neo Mod
than pure Punkrock. Great music and a great sense of style.
Band No 3 are the “Modern Pets” who, like
so many others, moved from Germany’s more conservative South to Berlin. Faster
than Zack Zack and the Not-Amused but with the same love for catchy melodies,
they sound the most like classic English Punkrock and reminded me a lot of “Eater”.
Last up is Texas Terri Bomb. Last, but
certainly not least. If you have only a little love for the Dead Boys, Johnny
Thunders or basically anything that came out of New York’s Bowery in the late
70s, you will love Texas Terri. The Los Angeles emigrant is a tattoo-covered,
self destructive powerhouse on stage and gives the phrase Kick-Ass a new
meaning.
Talking about classic Punkrock, those are
the four bands most worth checking out right now. However, there are dozens
more Streetpunk, Oi, Hardcore, Garage, Psychobilly, whatever bands there. Bad
Co. Project (former singer of Oxymoron), Frontkick, Radio Dead Ones, Bonzai
Kitten and of course Mad Sin are well worth checking out too.
Two more bands have to be mentioned but
deserve a column of their own: Germany’s probably biggest band within the
Punkrock context: “Die Aerzte” and Berlin’s Punkrock pioneers “PVC”. Check out
their classic “Wall City Rock” album!
So now that I made you all want to go to
Berlin, you still need a place to stay and that would be the “Rock’n’Roll
Herberge”, a reasonable priced Hostel with a Punkrock bar that’s open all
night! In the middle of Berlin’s Punkrock area Kreuzberg.

And if you wake up early enough to do some
sightseeing, forget about the usual stuff and check out the Ramones Museum
instead. I was amazed by how much stuff they have there. Really nice place with
a café and live shows occasionally.
*Military service was obligatory in
Germany, but given its special status, Berlin was excluded from the law,
therefore many people who didn’t want to serve moved their residency to Berlin.
2回目のコラムはベルリンとその音楽について書くよ。ベルリンは、昔も今も、ドイツの田舎もののすべての若いパンクロッカーが、そこにいたいと願う場所だ。ベルリンにはコティ【Ｃｏｔｔｉ】（地下鉄のCottbusse Tor)や、パンクハウスPunkhouse】、 SO 36みたいな伝説的な場所やライブハウスがある。80年代のベルリンでは壁に向かってデヴィッド・ボウイが"Heroes"を歌ったし、イギー・ポップとニック・ケイブがナイトクラブでドラッグをやってた。たくさんの不良やアウトサイダーが兵役から逃げてベルリンに向かったんだ。（※ドイツでは兵役が義務だったが、ベルリンだけは例外が認められて法の下になかったため、兵役を逃れたい多くの人々がベルリンに逃げ込んだ）
僕がドイツ人だからっていうのもあるけど、個人的な意見じゃなくてベルリンがヨーロッパで一番かっこいい町だと思ってるヨーロッパ人は結構多いと思う。もちろんローマやマドリッドみたいな町に比べたらきれいじゃないし、テクノとかエレクトロ以外では最先端の音楽トレンドも生まれてはいないけどね。でもベルリンのよさはそういうところじゃないんだ。ベルリンはいつも避難所だった。80年代は東ヨーロッパの社会主義国、今はブランデンブルグ州の田舎者とかの敵に周りを囲まれた、ど真ん中のデカダンスの島だ。もともとお金がない人とか低所得の人たちが集まってくる場所、イギーポップが歌ったみたいに"lust for life"人生を生きたいと願う場所だったんだ。
ドイツ南部のパンクバンドは周りの保守的な退屈と戦わなきゃいけないし、ベルリンのパンクスはストリートの厳しくていやな現実に直面しなきゃならなかった。クスリ（Christiane Fの"Wir Kinder vom
Bahnhof Zoo【麻薬と売春の日々】1981"を読んでみて。）ギャング、暴力とか、今なら馬鹿なナチスのやつらとかね。ベルリンのパンクロックとハードコアはいつもドイツのどの町よりもタフな感じだけど、それはベルリンの町がそうだからなんだ。
だけど今回は紹介するのは、もっとクラシックでメロディックな77スタイルの4つのバンドだよ。オールドファッションに合わせてね（笑）。まずは"ツァクツァク（Zack Zack）"。日本でも知ってるひとがいると思うけど、"The Briefs"ともコラボしてた"The
Shocks"の何人かがつくったバンドで、"The Shocks"よりもパワーポップの影響を受けてて、曲はもっとゆっくりでメロディックな感じだね。彼らは典型的なドイツのスタイルだけど、ドイツ語で歌ってることもあってサウンドはドイツのニューウェーブだ。
次はザ・ノット・アミューズド（The Not-Amused）。彼らは自分たちの音楽を”完璧なパワーポップ”と言ってるけど、まさにそのとおり。純粋なパンクロックよりネオモッズで、すごくいい音楽とセンスを持ったスタイルなんだ。
3つめのバンドはザ・モダン・ペッツ（The Modern Pets)で、彼らは元々シュツットガルトのバンドなんだけど、他の多くのバンドと同じく保守的な南部からベルリンに来たバンドだ。ツァクツァクとかザ・ノットアミューズドより速いけど、同じくキャッチーなメロディで、もっとクラシックなイングリッシュパンクロックみたいだから、僕はいつもイーター"Eater"を思い出すよ（笑）。
最後はテキサス・テリー・ボム(Texas Terri Bomb)だ。もしザ・デッド・ボーイズ(the Dead Boys）やジョニー・サンダース(Johnny Thunders)とか、基本的に70年代後半にニューヨークのCBGBからきた音楽が好きなら、絶対にこのバンドは好きだと思う。全身刺青、破壊的なステージングが売りの、ロスからベルリンに来た女ヴォーカルのバンドだ。クラシック・パンクロックについて話すなら、今この4つのバンドはチェックしないといけないね。でもベルリンにはストリートパンクやオイ、ハードコア、ガレージ、サイコビリーのバンドもたくさんあるよ。たとえば元オキシモロン(Oxymoron)のヴォーカルがやってる、バッド・コー・プロジェクト(Bad Co.Project)、フロントキック(Frontkick)、レディオ・デッド・ワンズ(Radio Dead Ones)、ボンツァイ・キッテン(Bonzai Kitten)、そしてもちろんマッド・シン(Mad Sin)もチェックするに値するね。
そしてパンクロックといえばドイツで一番有名なディ・アルツテ(Die Aerzte)と、ベルリンのパンクロックのパイオニア"PVC"も忘れちゃいけないな。彼らのクラシック""Wall City
Rock"のアルバムもチェックして！
